South Dublin County Council Active Travel department is proposing to undertake a series of commissions over 5 years beginning in 2023. This is in response to Cycle South Dublin, an ambitious programme of work that reflects the increasing importance of making cycling a realistic and integral part of how people move around the County. It proposes a set of 45 routes that would deliver approximately 263km of new and improved cycle lanes over the next ten years. In addition to improving/creating active travel facilities in South Dublin County Council, Cycle South Dublin seeks to improve the environments which influence the experience and decision to walk and cycle.
Through the active travel department, South Dublin County Council is seeking expressions of interest from artists of all disciplines, with experience of community collaboration, for the commissioning of artworks that creatively explore public spaces through a 2 stage process:
a. Stage 1 is open to all artists. It is an initial expression of interest that will result in the shortlisting of a maximum of 8 artists who will progress to stage 2
b. At Stage 2, selected shortlisted artists will be required to provide a detailed project proposal to include site location, analysis of the concept, visuals, methodology, technical information, time frame and budget breakdown.
The commissions may involve street art murals, art installations, public realm improvements, environmental art or installations in other media along the cycle/walking network. the programme will provide a platform for artists to respond creatively to public spaces/corridors and increase public engagement with the arts.
